First electric street lighting in South Africa, Kimberley – 1882

On 2 September 1882, Kimberley became the first town not only in South Africa, but also in the Southern Hemisphere to install electric street lighting.  During the late nineteenth century Kimberley as a town of great prominence, was very much in the fore front with developments in technology.
